Are landlords supposed to clean before tenants move in?

So my friend and I just leased an Appt. We went into clean it before our assigned move in date because it was kind of dirty (vacant for a while). To our dismay we cleaned for 6 hours and was much dirtier than we thought. We vacumed the whole place, which was a bag and a half of dust. We removed bugs off the bathroom ceilings and cleaned everything so the whole place was spotless. Removed dirt of off everything and windexed every window and cleaned beyond. We vacumed and shampood carpets as well. We were happy with our work until we told people and they told us that the landlord should have cleaned it and shampood the carpets before we moved in. We spent 50 bucks in supplies and wasted 6 hours of our time. Could we ask the tennant to give us a reduction on the next months rent? or ask to be re-embursed? There were plates and cheese bags in the cabinents and it seemed like it hadnt been cleaned ina long time. We also got rid of hot water calcium build up on all the sinks. We also KABOOMed every sink and bathtub. My friend and I are 20 and 19 and this is our first time renting. Should we talk to our landlord about it and ask for the rental reduction for a month or... should we just drop it?
