Is there a symbolic reason why Jesus was a carpenter?

The writers of the Jesus myths wanted their hero to be a common man, someone the commoners could relate to. They picked the carpentry trade at random. He could have been a fisherman, a stonemason or an electrician and it would not have changed the stories in any way. Well, maybe not an electrician, but you get my point, right?
